Examining the Leader in Leadership

Today we explored values, beliefs and attitudes and how they underpin a persons choices and actions. Values,Beliefs and Attitudes

I would like you to re-read the article Transformational Leadership and respond to the following:

  1. What values and beliefs do you see in the leader who would use this style?
  2. What are the key differences are there between the more traditional Autocratic Leadership and the more contemporary Transformational Leadership?

27 comments:

  1. A transformational leader would always hold good self management, and keep their egos in check. A transformational leader will always be able to adapt to different situations, and inspire those around them.
With an autocratic leader, they tend to get the job done easier, because they never hear possible ways to complete or finish a task. A transformational leader is more passive, and will never have as much control over the group.

    1. Hmmm... I'm not sure that "they provide followers with an inspiring mission and vision and give them an identity. The leader transforms and motivates followers through his or her idealized influence (earlier referred to as charisma), intellectual stimulation and individual consideration" is passive behaviour Danika. Transformational leaders are less controlling:are willing to accept, even encourage input from their followers -to sit back and leave a space for others to step into it but this is, to me not a passive behaviour

    2. I learnt that Transformative leadership leads to empowerment of followers. Empowerment is a critical process that helps define transformational leadership. It illustrates why it is effective in building follower commitment and inspiring better performance. Yet empowering followers entails a delicate balance between sharing of power and relinquishing it. It is therefore for a transformative leader to be aware of both the shortcomings of empowerment and ways in which it can be made more effective.

    3. I absolutely agree Danika. If the leader is a bit of a control freak and could micro-manage a group or team with ease, as a transactional leader does, they have to work very hard suppressing that tendency and replacing it with deliberate acts of delegation (and trust the team member to get on with the task and deliver) They also have to have the social intelligence to determine the right amount of support to give each team member.

  3. A transformational leader sees value within a individual and is open to changing the way they lead and approach situations. They hold values that enable people to be inspired by them. They care for others needs and mentor them as if they are a coach, They are willing to take risks and challenge assumptions. They are willing to push beyond the boundaries. They hold the values of a role model.
The difference between and autocratic leader and a transformational leader is a transformational leader rewards people for reaching expectations and is passive. An autocratic leader has one-way communication. Is aggressive, takes all the credit and has absolute power.

    1. What do you mean by "a transformational leader rewards people for reaching expectations and is passive" Ngawaiora? You are one of four people in this group who has used the word passive. He aha to maramatanga o tenei kupa?

    2. The word passive means accepting or allowing what happens or what others do, without active response or resistance. This means then react in a more calmer manner and are generally more understanding.

    3. After seeing the Behaviour Continuum I hope that you were able to see that 'passive' was not the best word to use when looking at effective leadership behaviour.

  4. I think a transformational leader would value; the Growth of an employee/peer, compassion, determination and learning.
The difference between an Autocratic leader and a Transformational leader is how they act while in the process of achieving tasks. An autocratic leader wants jobs/tasks to be done quickly and they are quite aggressive. A transformational leader is more compassionate and patient towards their peers, and wants to see people grow.

    1. You appear to have consulted the list of values you compiled yesterday Danni. I'm glad you are using that resource. I like the phrase 'while in the process of achieving tasks'

  5. A transformational leader is all about positive change within followers. They value development within their followers.
A transactional leader is more passive and they reward followers for their work. An Autocratic leader is aggressive and holds all the power. Autocratic leaders also take all the credit.

    1. You have picked up on one key value and difference Jean. I would like you to explore and explain more to develop your ability to process text to deepen understanding of the underlying concepts.

  6. An important value of a transformational leader is commitment because they will always set a task that they are committed to at a high priority and also reflect the same energy onto the “followers”. The main difference between a transformational leader and an autocratic leader is that a transformational leader prioritizes personal development as well as the task whilst an autocratic leader prioritizes the task primarily with no room for personal development and relationship building.

    1. Commitment is an interesting value that no-one else picked up on Shane and one that I wholeheartedly concur with. You can only inspire others to contribute to a vision if the starting point is that you value and commit to that vision yourself. Dannielle alluded to the fact that what happens after that is a process. So, the transformational leader must have a process plan after that?
According to you, transformational leadership can achieve the vision(task) whilst developing people. Hence the process plan has to do both.

    2. I learnt that passive means accepting what happens without active response or resistance. This can be used along side an aggresive or assertive approach depending on the situation

  7. The values and beliefs i see in a transformational leader is someone whose end goal is to help change a follower into a leader. Firstly the leader should have or grow a tight connection with the follower, then to have great communication skills and cooperation.

The difference between the more traditional Autocratic Leadership and the more contemporary Transformational Leadership is that...Transformational leaders work to enhance the motivation and engagement of followers. While transactional leadership operates within existing boundaries of processes, structures, and goals, transformational leadership challenges the current state and is change-oriented.

    1. I really like the understanding so concisely expressed in your opening sentence Whitiora. Indeed your whole post picks up on some very pertinent points.Relationships ARE integral to successful leadership. Individuals who feel valued will often work more effectively because they appreciate the trust inherent in the leader's articulations and actions. A sensitive change-orientated leader, harnesses the capabilities of the individuals within the group by giving them opportunities to lead themselves (in small ways).

    2. I learnt that you can not be an autocratic leader if you are passive because they don’t tie nicely together. That if you are a transformative leader you urge the need to have a good connection with the follower and build some sort of relationship with him or her

    3. Nor does 'passive' align with Transformational leadership Whitiora

  8. A transformational leader is interested in positive change in the followers with the end goal of developing followers into leaders. The Values I see of a transformational leader are community, cooperation, social responsibility, service oriented leadership and altruistic motivations, balance, equality and diversity, optimism towards the future and whole process learning. I believe that the main 3 values, balance, equality and diversity, are the values this type of leader would use. Beliefs that I see in a leader who would use this style is, “take the situation seriously, but not yourself and also know that transformational change cannot happen through me unless it has happened to me”

The differences between the more traditional Autocratic Leadership and the more contemporary Transformational Leadership is the Autocratic Leader is an individual that is all about control, taking full ownership of all decisions and very little input from group members, very rarely take advice from followers. Transformational leadership and Its counterpart is the transactional leadership approach, in which the leader focuses on getting employees to achieve organisational goals.

  9. It is obvious,Troy, that you connected back to the list of values you compiled yesterday to construct this post. There are also ideas here that demonstrate you sought further understanding from another source. Well done. The result is a more expansive and insightful response in this post. Ka rawe.

  10. I think that a transformational leader is one who brings about valuable and positive transformation . He empowers and develops the people they lead to become leaders themselves, and challenges them to bring out their best and take greater ownership of their work.
The autocratic leadership is based on control. The autocrat is rarely well-liked, and an autocratic leader uses a militant-like style. The autocrat gives orders and expects prompt execution from the worker. The style of a Transformational is not harsh, as an autocratic leadership type is, but it does punish poor performance.

    1. In my opinion, you have captured and understood key differences between autocratic leaders (ALs) and transformational leaders(TLs) Alessia. In effect TLs are 'agents of change'.

  11. I think that a transformational leader values his peers/followers and being able to help them grow. They value making a positive change for others and wanting to develop their peers into leaders themselves. Sharing their knowledge.
The differences between an autocratic and transformational leader are their attitudes towards others and the way they express their beliefs. A transformational leader is passive and willing to listen to others ideas to make a bigger and better change whereas an autocratic leader is aggressive and has one-way communication where it’s their opinion and their opinion only.
