Seeking Situational Leadership(SL)

It is commonly believed that adaptability has to be a strong attribute of a Situational Leadership. Over the next week:
1.I would like you to seek out the 'best' article or literature you can find online and post a link to that site so your peers can view it.
Then I would like you to summarise what you learnt from that article

I learnt that being a 'situational leader' is all about adaptability, and being able to change from one leadership style to another, in order to meet the changing needs for the organisation, or team. These leaders must have insight and good understanding for when they need to change their leadership styles.
The characteristics include, trust, insight, flexibility, coaching, and problem solving.
The advantages of using this leadership style -
    1. It is easy to use. When a leader has the right style, he/she knows it
    2. It is more simple. All the leader needs to do is asses the situation, then decide what leadership style to use.
    3. Leaders have permission to change management styles as they fit.
The disadvantages of this leadership style -
    1. This North American style of leadership does not take into consideration priorities and communication styles of other cultures.
    2. It ignores the differences between male and female managers.
    3. Situational leaders can divert attention away from long-term strategies and politics

    1. I am intrigued by disadvantage 1 Danika. Does this mean the SL has to be aware of cultural preferences when interacting with individuals in their team? That if their is dissonance, the leader has to adapt rather than force the team member into their cultural way of communicating?

From this article I learnt that the situational leadership depends on the situation and that all the strategies are best-suited to the task. So the leaders should adapt their style to the situation. Hersey and Blanchard, that developed the situational leadership, suggested that there are four primary leadership styles. They also say that the right style of leadership depends greatly on the maturity level of the individuals or group. At the end they match leadership style with maturity levels. I think that the advantage of this situational model of leadership is that it focuses on flexibility, so that leaders are able to adapt according to the needs of their followers and the demands of the situation.

    1. Great, you mentioned the duo credited with developed this leadership style Alessia AND you have picked up on the aspect of matching the level of leadership to the maturity of the individual/group.

From this site I have learnt that situational leadership is about choosing what type of leadership style you’re going to use depending on the situation. Adapting to the different people or places you have. According to this theory, the most effective leaders are those that are able to adapt their style to the situation and look at cues such as the type of task, the nature of the group, and other factors that might contribute to getting the job done.

    1. Your response is succinct while still identifying key elements of SL Alecia. Did you discover who first posited this model?

    2. Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard, developed while working on Management of Organizational Behavior. The theory was first introduced in 1969 as "life cycle theory of leadership"

  4. "The fundamental idea of situational leadership is that there is no such thing as a single best or fixed type of leadership". Hmmm... so that suggests to me that a situational leader may use a more transactional style (Telling) with individuals within a group who are either unmotivated and/or low skilled, yet use a more collaborative style with individuals who motivated/skilled withing the same group. Is that what the article seems to suggest?

In situational leadership it is up to the leader to change their style and to be adaptable to many situations, not for the follower to adapt to the leader’s style. The leader’s style may change continually to meet the needs of the situation and the others. For this leadership style to be successful the leader has to have a good understanding of when they need to change their styles. With this style of leadership the employee does what they are told and is often referred to as micro management. Decisions are made by the leader but input is welcomed and considered into the final decision. Characteristics of a situational leader are flexibility, participation, delegation, integrity, and courage.

    1. So with capable people -you just get out of their way but with people of low motivation/capability you micro-manage?

while analysing this literature it states that Situational leadership is flexible. It adapts to the existing work environment and the needs of the organisation or team. This strategy encourages leaders to take stock of their team members. This sort of Leader must be able to move from one leadership style to another to meet the changing needs of there team.

Situational leadership is about being adaptable. It is up to the leader to match his/her behaviour with the performance needs of the individual or group that they are attempting to influence. A leader must be willing to be very flexible with respect to his employees. Situational leadership requires the leader to be able to choose what type of leadership style they are going to use depending on the situation, to meet the changing needs of an organization and employees. It’s not about finding the perfect leadership style; it’s about leading the right way in each situation. According to Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard a leader will have to adapt his style to level of maturity of the employee. As the maturity increases, the independence of the employee also increases accordingly.

  10. Situational leadership is being able to adapt to any situation. A leader who is aware of when and how to willingly change their leadership according to certain behaviours. According to https://online.stu.edu/articles/education/what-is-situational-leadership.aspx a situational leader must be able to interchange between all the different styles of leadership to meet the changing needs of either an organisation or an employee.
