Collaboratively Designing a Circuit

You will be using collaborative leadership to design a circuit  so the power is shared
throughout the group and each team member takes on responsibilities to conclude
the task successfully.

Please open the following and collaborate to complete.
Collaborative Planning Doc

Then respond to the following prompts.
1. What station are you setting up tomorrow. Who decided that? Did you feel you had 'a voice' in the decision-making? Elaborate upon your answer.
2. What other principles/characteristics from Collaborative Leadership were present in today's  design meeting? (you will need to consult the literature)

3. Were there any principles/characteristics that were missing that could have/should have been present?

  1. The station that I am setting up tomorrow is dead lifts, I decided to change from squats to dead lift because in our circuit we didn't have a workout that targeted the back. I felt that I had a voice in what I wanted to do and I am happy with that.
Everyone shared their own information on what they wanted to do and there was trust within the group. Collaboration does not work unless there is trust, we had to trust each others decisions and trust the process. There was an inclusive vision shared within the group to organised our training circuit. Each collaboration project requires a clear, inspiring vision to give the group an idea of what success looks like. We all had a main focus on what we were going to do, “Muscle Training Circuit”.
A characteristic that I believe should have been present in the meeting was “Balanced Motivations”. E.g. Everyone wishes to generate value and always looking to use motivation and influence to create a positive impact within the group to make our training circuit successful.

  2. I am so glad you picked up on trust Troy and I do agree you have to trust the person(s) you are working with.But...can you collaborate with another who is willing to contribute but does not have the knowledge level or competence? What would you do? Perhaps that's what you mean by trust the process?

  3. The station that I had set up was the "squats" station using a dumbbell. I decided to take on this station as I felt more familiar with the movement, and it would be a good starting point for me in the circuit training. I felt like I had a voice, as I had a say on what station I would feel more comfortable starting with.
A characteristic we all used, was "openly sharing information". Unless information is shared openly across the planning, it is not possible to create an atmosphere of trust and collaboration between all of us students.
A characteristic we all could've shown more as a whole, would be all of us having a "stronger network" between our class. More communication and discussing specific details could've made our circuit a lot easier the next day.

  4. We all shared our ideas with each other and decided as a whole which workouts we were going to do and where in the circuit they would go to best suit us. I feel like I did have a voice in amongst the discussions and I was happy with what we had come up with together.
I believe that a characteristic that really helped with our collaborative leadership was sharing information. Open information sharing is the cornerstone of collaborative leadership. Getting everyone on the same page in a project requires information sharing.

  5. The station that I had set up was warm up. We made star jumps, high knees, butt flicks and some stretch. We did it for 10 minutes. Jean and Danni helped me to choose these exercises and I feel that I had a ‘voice’ in the decision-making because they didn’t force me and because I like this station.
We sat around the table and we shared the information and our preferences, and I think that at the end everyone had the perfect station for himself. There was team building and power sharing and this helped us a lot.
I think that we should have discussed about the stations a little more and involved some people a little bit more.

  6. Tomorrow I am setting up a shoulder press station, I suggested the idea and the group discussed it and the weights that girls and boys should be using. Our group was situated around a table and the stations were discussed upon by every individual and everyone has a voice to contribute towards our goal. Everyone was present from our class and to the discussion. Another characteristic we used was everyone openly shared information, this is crucial to create an atmosphere of trust and collaboration. A characteristic that was missing in today’s discussion was balanced motivations, some people were taking more charge than other members of the group. Although everyone got their say in the activity there could be some hesitation to speak up about the organization of the whole activity and how it was going to work by some individuals.

  7. Tomorrow I decided I will be setting up the leg raises station. As a class we discussed what stations we were going to do, Yes I felt I had a voice in the decision making and I am beyond happy with that. Each individual was able to share their own thoughts and opinions on what the outcome of the circuit will look like. By everyone sharing their own thoughts it built trust within the group. Openly sharing information is one characteristic that I believed worked well for our class as we were planning. A characteristic that I think could have been present in the meeting was “Balanced Motivations” It would have been better if everyone had similar energy and motivations to create a positive outcome for our training circuit.
